Dave Liddell's art focus really began for him early in his life. He was often found spending countless hours in the wood-shop making small things for his mother, or fabricating small figurings with a welding setup. Later he petitioned his Grandfather, a longtime hobbyist potter, to teach him wheel thrown forms in clay. He agreed to give pointers, but thought that the real way to learn a medium was to discover it for yourself. He was right. Over the next few years Dave worked on his ceramics skills, continually improving and finally understanding what his Grandfather had meant. He eventually began giving private lessons to beginners who desired to learn. He never charged a penny as long as the student really wanted to learn. Watching this intensity and ambition come alive in his pupils was reward enough. He taught using techniques he had created; never having taken a formal class himself. At the same time stressing to his students what his Grandfather had really taught him; one must find their own way to really embrace a medium.
In late 2000 he took his first glassblowing course with a friend on a whim. He found it so intriguing that he could not stop thinking about it and could do nothing else but continue learning. He took courses from renowned artists such as John Bennett and Fritz Dreisbach. Today he continues to work on his craft and has even more ambition for the medium now than when he started. He feels he is just starting to be innovative in the field and is excited about what he intends to achieve in the next few years.
